The people who lived 3000 years ago where just as smart (on average) as
those who live today, but they knew a lot less. Knowledge accumulates
from one generation to another barring a social distaster or a plague
that utterly wipes out stores of knowledge.

So? We do what we do and we learn what we can learn. The Universe does
not give a damn about us because it is not a sentient being which can
give a damn about anything.
