Roy, that doesn't match what I see in my area. The good farmers have
soil sampling done and follow the recommendations. I'm not sure of the
current NH3 price. It doesn't pay to over fertilize. It take about 1# of
to produce 1 bushel of corn. Yields of 200bu/acre aren't really that
unusual in my area for irrigated corn.
There was a time when you would've been right. There wasn't much soil
sampling done and the application equipment wasn't very accurate. NH3 was
cheaper too. Farmers were more worried about under application as the
application rate wasn't very even. Nitrate contamination of ground water
is a problem brought on partly because of that over application.
