Entropy does seem to be the eventual determinant in the long-term
outcome of the universe, but I'm not convinced that we know enough to
rule out alternative, more exotic scenarios than an always-increasing
rate of expansion and eventual eternal darkness.

At this point 5 million years sounds pretty good for the species. I'd
settle for that much myself if I could be comfortable and autonomous
and free to explore. Why I could actually witness some real geological
goings on if I could last 5 million years.
