As a rule, while the Amish are competent in both German and English,
their vocabularies are rather limited. Among other things, none of the
Old Order Amish go to school past the 8th grade and none study any
mathematics more advanced that ratio and proportion. Geometry and
Algebra are considered "highfaluting" and a potential source of pride,
which they wish to avoid.

Most of them speak Plattsdeutsche, in any case. It's quite similar to
the German that the "civilized" Germans speak, but it originated as a
regional rural dialect and was considered somewhat "off" even at the
time the Amish began to migrate en-masse to the States. Probably most
Germans and most Amish could understand each other, about as well as a
Texas cowboy and an Aussie shepherd could understand each other, with a
great deal of effort on both parts.
