They did not swallow the story.
They were ordered to print it and simply followed orders.
The purpose is clear however.
To make the usual portion of the American Public think that the American
Military is secretly destroying the Afghan poppy crops and preventing the
heroin from being made and eventually distributed in the USA.
Since it is becoming obvious to so many folks that wherever the US military
goes, hard drugs and highly trained drug cartels immediately follow, this
was a simple Rove-Ruse to try and convince the "most of the people, who can
be fooled always", that the monstrously huge Afghan poppy crop is not an
Investment of the US Federal Government.
Which it is of course. :)
