Might want to check on the cost of setting up a business during
that time period. 1.3oz advp of gold was a good sized chunk of
money in that day.

Gold is gold, and always has its' intrinsic value. However, coinage was
pretty much valued by weight for precious metals; making coins instead
of finger-sized ingots was both convenient and satisfied a rulers' vanity.
Bronze coinage got away from the intrinsic value of metal somewhat, but
was pretty much traded by size, no matter which country minted it.
I have a few bronze Roman coins. They're pretty cheap, these days.
