But the question is WHY? I have my own answer(s),
but I wonder about what others would posit. Keeping
it strictly focussed on Japan for now, what is the reason
for the movement of auto manufacturing and then
technology to Japan?
Simply put, Drucker.
They sold the electronics at PXs,
no duty, very low overhead, low cost. Every
Sony reel to reel sold at a garage sale came
back on a MATS flight.
The transistor
radios were, like iPODs, kid-toys which were resonant with
the abandonment of mainstream radio as , er mainstream
(in favor of Ed Sullivan) and left to the kids.
The cars were simply cheap and reliable. The Honda
motorbikes had establed the brand as
wholesome ( "You Meet The Nicest People
on a Honda"), and the decline of the Triumph/Harley
Indian/et al brands left the market more open.
But the cars were Baby Boomer differentiation,
marketed in the Oil Crisis ( the Beetle was dead )
as Not Yer Father's Oldsmobile.
