1. Population growth. There is only so much real estate available.
Price of it is bid up by those coming later on who want to live there.

2. Decline in the value of the dollar. Worth about 1/10 of what it was
back in the 1950's. Inflation rate didn't get going until the '70's...
Real jump in prices came about 1975 with higher costs of energy.
