France's economy is very sluggish to say the least. In 1991 it was
actually larger than the UK's. That is no longer the case.
Unemployment in France is also much worse, running currently at 10.2%,
USA 5.1%, and the UK is 4.7%. 3% is what is known as frictional
unemployment, people changing job, taking time off, or unaccountable
retirees. Worse for France, it suffers from over employment, its very
difficult for companies to fire workers, so most larch companies remain
bloated. PPP is useful in comparing economies at the extreme, but in
comparing those countries in the OECD its better to use GDP per capita,
since the value of their currencies is probably an accurate view of the
markets. Despite Chirac's boast that France would become the engine of
the worlds economy, it is a poor performer. They are protecting a way
of life that is long gone.
