Ya know, my Mom used to tell me when I was a kid "Just because
all the other kids are doing it ... doesn't mean you have to." along
with "If they all decided to jump off the San Francisco bridge, would
you follow?"
Civilized or not, it's nothing more than state-sponsored theft, putting
my dollars (or <whatever> local currency) into your pocket for your
benefit. Theft. Plain and simple.
