Why not use economics more and bombs less? Why not more embargoes and
boycotts rather than rifles and explosives? The embargoes really hurt
Cuba. China greatly fears less trading. Even Hamas is now talking about
changing to prevent economic sanctions. The Iraq oil-for-food program
may have worked if it had been enforced.

The embargo might have hurt Cubans, but it's been great for Castro. He can
and has blamed all his problems on the embargo.

If the people running the show here in the US were intelligent, which they
aren't, they'd completely normalize relations with Cuba. I predict under
those circumstances the Castroite regime would last less than a decade.

As for the humanity of economics, some people claim that the sanctions
against Hussein in the 1990s were partly responsible for the deaths of
hundreds of thousands of children.

Futhermore, economic actions can lead to military ones, as happened when the
West embargoed Japan in the 1930s.
