THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
Very good article, and so true.
I use to use the term: "Cultural Isolationism" for the core reason of
the current situation in US.
Starting with the usage of imperial system instead of the world wide used
metric and preference for a reality show instead of reading a book US
created a self sustained system preventing people to learn what is better
for them.
Having university tuition free, the EU student when he take a summer job
will take it into a foreign country where he come in contact with other
cultures, exchange new ideas see what is going good and what is going bad
there. His vacations become one of most usefull educational lessons about
society, culture, civilization, people and life. When he finish university
he already have a broad view of the society and he know what right a
civilized decent society is supposed to have, and will try to achieve them.
The American student, will always take the summer job at home to save as
much money he can in order to pay for his student loans. There is no
cultural exchange with another society to be made, there are no new
civilizations to be seen at work, there are no other type of society to
learn from. What he saw as a kid is what he see as a student is what he see
as a professional. Not having anything to compare with, you are very likely
to believe when told that.... this is the best.
When he finish the school he is stressed to pay back that loan.
No up to 2 month style European vacation is available in US so he can
travel. The 10 days (if he is lucky to get) barely are enough to see a
doctor for a general check and finally .... to sleep. The only time
off he have are into a recession when unemployed walking stressed from
employer to employer to find a shitty job to be able to get medication
for his kid.
Not having anything to compare against, he still believe that his life is
better than everybody else. And believing this will do nothung to change
it. So his kid will always take a summer job at home to save money to be
able to pay for that student loan ........
