Yes, in article:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/20/dobbs.june21/index.html

"This is a classic debate between two different philosophies. One
philosophy believes in the marketplace, competition and
entrepreneurship, and the second is a philosophy that says government
knows best," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia. He said France and
Germany have high minimum wages but also high unemployment."

There is no reference to France & Germany in the article.

Hi,

No but both clearly have a problem with a lack of job opportunity, and large
numbers of young people who don't have jobs.

I have to admit, that this Sen. Isakson seems to have a point.

Every politician want people to believe that they have a point.

The
unemployment rate (UR) in Europe is much more than 6%, and their
minimum wage is higher, although I'm not sure where it stands.

Part of the problem may also be the different ways EU and US calculate the
unemployment. Minutes ago, retrogo posted the following message:

True different countries calculate their UNEMPLOYMENT rates differently.
Better to compare EMPLOYMENT rates--called work force participation rates.

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.politics.economics/msg/fc7a7a541bc298d3?hl=en&;

Another explanation is for sure the high life level an unemployed European
can afford. In many cases, an unemployed family in EU can live better than
a working poor family in US with both parents working full time.

Is that related to the gangs of unemployed youth that riot and burn cars in
France? And those "soccer fans" famous in England?

I thought that when economists calculate the unemployment rate, that
they don't take into account certain segments the population.
Moreover, there are certain situations which the UR gauge is not
accurate/informative on. For example, it doesn't state if people are
under-employed.

Correct. In many UE countries, you can draw unemployment for how long you
do
not find a job with your qualification. They don't force people to be
underemployed.

"Under-employed" means working for less pay than you think you are worth.
Aren't most people included in that?

Here is my question: In your opinion, do you think that raising the
minimum wage would be a benefit/burden to the US economy and US
well-being?

In the same articol, you find the answer to your question too:
"""
The myth that raising the minimum wage will lead to job cuts is just that:
a
myth.

???

http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/4834/minwage.txt

....In fact, research suggests just the opposite.

If raising the minimum wage increases the number of jobs, how high would it
need to be for everyone to have a job? $20/hr? $50?

....According to the Fiscal
Policy Institute, since 1998, states with higher minimum wages experienced
better job growth than states paying only the federal minimum wage. Among
small retail businesses in those higher minimum-wage states, job growth
was
double the rest of the country.

Think maybe states raise their minimum wage because they already have job
growth, and demand has already driven up wages?

"""
So there seems not to be any negative corelation. By the opposite, a
higher
wage favor better growth.

It is only a gang of republicans and libertarians corporate sock puppets
spreading this kind of myth.

Plus most economists.

...They are people mentally blinded by
pathological greed ...

Plus theory and data.

But my favorite is ACORN who wants a higher minimum wage--for everyone
EXCEPT for themselves.

http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/4834/minq.txt

Do you think they should be exempt? And if a lower wage is illegal, why not
punish the workers who agree to it?

It's time for the federal government to reverse the trend, to at least
substantially raise the minimum wage in this country, and by doing so
express how much we value all working Americans.
"""

I say $50 an hour. Why should we settle for less?
