Master of Arts

Hello all.
I just completed a Master of Arts from a state university. I don't
really want to say which one, but it is the central university of a US
state. Thing is, I thought it was going to be "in Economics."
Certainly, the majority of the courses were Economics, and I took a
comprehensive exam in Economics, and I could teach undergraduate
Economics.
But the transcripts and other documents just say "Master of Arts." I
asked the school and they said "thats how we do it." Is this normal?
Can I reasonably claim to have a Master of Arts in Economics? I
learned a lot from this program, but I need the credential.
Thanks,
Craig
