Not necessarily. But more regulated, heck yes.

You get millions knowing top ten golf players but 30% are not able to locate
Louisiana on the map, and this AFTER Katrina.

You get highschool kids able to tell you the name of last 25 earners of
"golden glove" (is there something like this, maybe yes:-) but not able to
tell you anything about Archimedes.

I strongly believe that it is media to blame for this behaviors.
They broadcast baseball every day, but I never saw them on
doing the same for a schoolers math competition.
