That has happened seldom, and often with disasterous consequences. The Terror following the French Revolution was worse than the monarchy ever was.

There have been a few successful non disastrous revolutions. The American Revolution and Cromwell's overthrowing of the Monarchy. After the Monarchy was restored Parliement retained sufficient control and kings after Charles Stuart tended to be loveable and humble (by comparison to Charles I). After William and Mary, Britain was spared the curse of absolute rule.
