It was high-time for the Japanese economy to falter. Their banking
system is archaic, from what I understand. Also, they had real-estate
bubble that was very severe (the Imperial Palace was worth more than
the entire state of California!) at one point.

This is why they had a protracted recession. I highly doubt that the
entire reason was because of US dollar/Yen policy. I mean, the
Japanese could have easily un-hiked their Yen.
