chances are it will be OK just to substitute it. usually a pot is wired
like this:
+ve --------------
|
[]
[]
[]<-----wiper (output)
[]
[]
|
ground -----------
The voltage on the wiper will change just the same whichever value pot you
use. The only problem is if it's wired differently, or if the circuit is
expecting to be able to draw more current than the higher value pot can
cope with. (As current is drawn from the wiper down to ground, it changes
the output voltage slightly).
