I contacted a battery store in Palo Alto about the battery for an Xli, and
they said they no longer carry them, since they have proven unreliable. This
might be the case. Certainly within three years of having this laptop, the
battery faltered. Any comments on the wisdom of buying a battery for this
laptop?

Battery life depends on the type of battery (NiCd, NiMH, Li-Ion), the
type of use (from true portable - battery runs to shutoff to desktop -
always plugged in), and the quality of the charger. Based on my experience as the supply depot for a conculting company, I
would expect about 2 years from NiMH or Li-Ion used in a mixed
portable/desktop environment.
Some lithium-based batteries have a "maximum number of charge cycles"
life, which is not dependent on the level of discharge - just the
number of times it's put on charge.
My personal laptop gets 2.5 to 3 years from a battery in a mixed
environment that's probably 10% portable and 90% desktop.

I've recently become familiar with the Li-poly batter for a small radio I have (Pogo. It's Tivo for radio.). 500 charge cycles. From the day I bought Pogo, battery charging seemed awkward. That is, the indicator would never show full charge, and despite long charges would only stay charged for a few days. It failed on me while recording an AM program for more than 90 minutes. I e-mailed the mfger, and they said pull it out for 24 hours, and then recharge it. Seems like a short period to me. If that doesn't work, buy a new one ($20) from them. It should go 7 to 14 hours of use on the charge.
Back on topic...
I just talked to a friend about my current old laptop, and he suggested trading it in at <thelaptopconnection.com> near Sacramento. I'm going to check that out. All I really want is an e-mail laptop that has a wireless connection.
