I contacted a battery store in Palo Alto about the battery for an Xli, and
they said they no longer carry them, since they have proven unreliable. This
might be the case. Certainly within three years of having this laptop, the
battery faltered. Any comments on the wisdom of buying a battery for this
laptop?

Battery life depends on the type of battery (NiCd, NiMH, Li-Ion), the
type of use (from true portable - battery runs to shutoff to desktop -
always plugged in), and the quality of the charger. Based on my experience as the supply depot for a conculting company, I
would expect about 2 years from NiMH or Li-Ion used in a mixed
portable/desktop environment.
Some lithium-based batteries have a "maximum number of charge cycles"
life, which is not dependent on the level of discharge - just the
number of times it's put on charge.
My personal laptop gets 2.5 to 3 years from a battery in a mixed
environment that's probably 10% portable and 90% desktop.

Slightly off topic ...
My Pogo radio (a small iPod-like radio that works like Tivo) has given me trouble with charging from day one. The indicator goes about 1/3 up after long periods of charging it. Since I was still able to use it, so I didn't really get concerned. This weekend it died while recording 90 minutes of a 120 minute program when it was 'fully' (ha!) charged. I e-mailed the mfger and they said it has a cycle life of 500, and that I should disconnect it from the radio for 24 hours then charge it. Seems like a short period to me. If that doesn't work, then I should buy a new battery, Li-poly) from them for $20.
Back on topic ...
A friend told me about a place near Sacramento called <thelaptopconnection.com> that sells used laptops. Maybe I can get one with a wireless connection for e-mail. They accept trade ins. That's what I planned to do with the Lli--e-mail machine with wireless. I'll explore that road with them.
