Over the last couple of weeks or so I've been having trouble with my
DSL service in that it's been intermittent. That is, sometimes I
got the bandwidth I was paying for, and sometimes I might have just
as well been using a dialup connection or not been connected to the
network at all.
Hmmm sounds just like a phone/computer/fax-machine/alarm-system is
plugged in without a filter.
---
Does it? Hmmm... I guess that's why we eliminated that as the first
possibility long ago.
---
Not being a mind reader, I wasn't able to glean that from your ramblings on
orthodontia.
---
Since removing the filter and connecting straight through is always
the first step in finding the problem, my ramblings shouldn't have
affected your thought processes in any way. And, BTW, it's
'periodontia'. Shouldn't have taken a mind reader to figure that
out either.

After going through a couple of levels of offshore troubleshooters I
finally got passed off to hardcore US tech support, and what a
surprise! And a pleasure.
A tech with a voice from Ohio checked my system and said that the
line seemed to be fine, so it might be my modem and would it be OK
if a tech showed up tomorrow to check whether the fault was on my
side of the line, or theirs.
Considering that the modem gives them up and downstream dBm values,
error rates and link speed/sync rate information; you'd think they'd
have more of a clue at this point.
---
What is it you don't understand about "intermittent"?
---
You're the one that seems to think that swapping one part and having it work
for two minutes constitutes a fix for an "intermittent problem". When the
tech came out, did he show you a poor sync rate or anything like that? Did
he do anything besides cracking open a new modem?
---
Sure. He ran some speed tests and then had the guys in his office
run some tests where they were getting a lot of errors from the
modem. This is Southwestern Bell, idiot. Do you think these people
are amateurs?
---
---
Well, after checking out everything else and having it be OK and
still nothing, plugging in the new modem and having everything
miraculously start working seems to be pretty good proof to me.
---
And power cycling/rebooting everything else while you were at it had zero
effect?
---
That's right.
---
For all we can tell from your post, you could have a trojan that
periodically wakes up and trashes your bandwidth. A statistically far more
likely occurence than a "bad" modem. I'm just saying you might not want to
start counting your chickens just yet. OTOH, since we don't know how long
the stretches were when it was working with the old modem, overnight may be
long enough to be reasonably sure it's working.
---
Look, Fremont, I'm not asking for any of your fucking advice or
diagnostics. The point of my post was merely to state that in this
age of idiots I found what seem to be some competent folks who fixed
a problem I had in a professional way and made me happy. If you
find fault with that then you can kiss my ass.
---
After that, everything worked. No charge, BTW
SBC Internet Services rules, as far as I'm concerned.
You're way to easy to impress.
---
You're an ***.
I'm not the one trying to take $100 from a 15 year old girl. If you want
professionalism from me, paypal me some money. :-)
---
Professionalism? It seems you don't even have honesty going for you
since the fact that she was 15 never came up during the
"negotiations", cheater.
And even If I'd known she was 15 from the beginning and she was
willing to pay to get something done, what would be wrong with my
getting paid for helping her out?
---
When a competent tech shows up here, physically, fixes my system and
leaves me with a working system and a new modem, all for free, I
consider that to be impressive service. YMMV.
---
What exactly did you expect to be charged for? The phone company swapped a
piece of their hardware, I wouldn't expect anything different than a
no-bill.
---
Even if the piece of hardware was out of warranty?
---
Call them a few more times. ;-)
---
Why?
---
To establish a better understanding of their true competence level perhaps.
---
I've called them enough times to have already determined that, thank
you very much.
---
I hope you didn't install all the gunk-ware.
---
I already told you it was just a simple modem change-out. Weren't
you paying attention?
I was referring to when you got DSL initially. If you installed all that
Yahoo stuff, then it's no wonder you have problems with your connection. I
hope you have some kind of router/firewall and not a direct connection.
---
Well, you have no need to know how my system is set up, so let's
just say that with the new modem installed it runs just like I want
it to.
