How to Advertise on Usenet
There are acceptable ways to advertise in Usenet newsgroups.
1. The on-topic notice
I don't have a dog in this fight,
but I believe that Paul's post falls under these guidelines. OMU
"On-topic" is determined by the charter of the group.
When the sci.electronics hierarchy was subdivided in 1996,
a group was set up SPECIFICALLY for commercial traffic
as to keep that SPAM out of this hierarchy.
Here is the charter for this group:
"Guide to the sci.electronics Newsgroups" by Mark Zenier
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics/msg/13651a897337a7a9?q=Charters+misc.industry.electronics.marketplace+Discussions+Advertisement-*-*+only-advertise+sci.electronics.basics-Elementary-*-*-*+zzz+the-rec-hierarchy+qq-qq+Discussion
People who have never PARTICIPATED in the group
and whose first post is this kind of crap are SPAMMERS.
When it is multi-posted, that is the smoking gun:

The OP doesn't give a rat's ass about this group
or about Usenet in general.
To him it's just another blank space to plaster an ad.
These low-lifes are to be pointed out and avoided.
Here's the cogent passage from Mr. Furr's article:
:In the midst of the discussions on the new sidewalks
:or textbooks or product, someone walks into the room,
:interrupts everyone, then reads an advertisement for a local
restaurant.
:He or she then leaves without waiting for comment.
A good ground rule for Usenet:

Just as the toughest guy in town doesn't have to prove it often,
people with valuable goods/services
don't have to jam ads for them in your face.
Announcements of freeware are the only exception I can think of
that I would put under the Acceptable heading
--and *restraint* is the watchword there.
I have seen posts about payware that I thought were over the line,
but because the OP was asking for interaction about its usability,
tolerance was granted by others smarter than I am.
In the sci.electronics hierarchy,
people advertise legitimately all the time.
They do it while PARTICIPATING:
When starting on-topic threads or responding to on-topic threads
they include a blurb for their goods/service in their footer.
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics.design/msg/64a7e0e898158761?q=James-E.Thompson-P.E+zzz+Analog-Innovations-Inc
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics.design/msg/d14c4396effa0253?q=Joerg+zzz+analogconsultants.com
THAT is acceptable.
There are those who troll for their goods/services IN CONTEXT:
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics.design/browse_frm/thread/424f16f3d09d7f54/5aa37732d675ba6a?q=zzz+SuperSpice
That is ALSO acceptable.
To paraphrase Mr. Furr:
Groups where ads are welcome are not hard to spot.
They have words in their names like
ads biz forsale marketplace.
In short, This is NOT a *marketplace* group.
Never was--and that's been true for over a decade.
