Identification of SMD IC: VM 3D - VM3D.jpg (0/1)

The attached picture shows IC305 in a Canon camcorder dated about
1993. The IC is cracked and non-functional and it bears the characters
VM at the top and 3D at the bottom. Can anyone identify the component
please.

Canon EX1HiE, PCB board is labelled: PAL MA2 and also carries the
numbers: DG1-1408 DH1-0977-01 item required is IC305, marked
VM3D..... package is SOT-89, I think it is a voltage regulator but
still not sure, any info would be good really.
