Satellite = Payload + Bus.

The payload = the parts which actually do the job - eg cameras on a
weather satellite, or transponders on a broadcast satellite.

This is distinct from the bus: the infrastructure which is required
to keep the thing up there and working. This includes the mechanical
framework, solar panels, batteries, attitude control system (keeps the
satellite in the right place & pointing in the right direction), etc.
