I'm reminded of a story in our reading class in 3rd grade
(the only Comparative Religion instruction received
in the 1st 3 years of school).
A peddler convinces a sheik to join the 19th Century and buy a clock.
The peddler sets the clock to Daylight Savings Time
and convinces the Arab that things will be much better this way.
The 1st day all is fine.
The 2nd day the clock starts speeding up
and the sheik has everybody match the clock.
Pretty soon folks are praying 9 times in 1 solar day
and taking the animals out to graze in the middle of the night.
The peddler comes back through and sees what's happening but
doesn't want to supercede the sheik's authority and reveal him as a fool.
Just then the clock goes completely haywire
and the hands start spinning wildly.
When the clock finally breaks completely and the hands stop,
the peddler sees his way out of the mess and drops to his knees.
"Allah be praised. It has stopped at the hour of prayer."
The sheik declares a week of rest to use all the time they "saved".
