Replace "232" with "485" and I'll agree... it gets around the rate
and length and most of the ground potential considerations at basically
zero cost.

Ethernet is really nice for many instruments because it is transformer-
coupled at both ends, getting rid of any nasty ground loops in your
instrumentation data connection.
