One good source for the earphone and the diode is one of the crystal radio
science fair kits, available from numerous sources for various prices. I ran
into a similar hangup last year with my daughter's last minute science fair
project, and due to time constraints I just gave in and bought a kit for the
earphone alone (the rest of the kit was junk, we didn't use it, but the
earphone and diode worked OK). I paid less than $10 USD for the kit. Pretty
expensive earphone, but so it goes.
Good luck
Chris
