A shorting u-bend is obviously more useful in connecting signals that
are otherwise intended to be externally processed.

Depending on your hardware configuration - the more permanent the
connection is intended to be, the less suited connector hardware will
be in general. A permanent installation will benefit from hard-wiring
- connectors are notorious for becoming noise sources as the years go
by. Shielded cable would be best for hardwiring, though the shield
connection need not be made at both ends.

The loop was generally only used to reroute in-line high-level
signals, and the connector return was common to the chassis, when not
carried out to and returned from the remote processor with shielded
cable hardware.

If your two assemblies are mounted on the same grounding hardware
plate, the common return is easily made there.
