Semiconductor "Geiger" counter?

I thought it was supposed to be possible to build some kind of 'Geiger' type
counter using a semiconductor diode, perhaps a bare photo diode. I can't
find any solid information though. I want to build something sensitive
enough to detects the background count. Any links about their capabilities
and design ideas would be much appreciated.
