Get a two-bit rotary encoder. Mount it on the shaft. Attach a
knob with 4 detents in it (90 degree spacing).
Turn knob one click to the "right" to "simulate clockwise move of one
detent". Likewise, turn to *left* to "simulate counterclockwise move
of one detent". Grasp knob firmly between fingers and give it a good,
hard *twist* clockwise to "start a rapid count in [that] direction".
:-/
Why "simulate" the movement of the shaft? Presumably, the piece of
equipment is *watching* the shaft's rotation for a *reason*!
