On most desk top PCs, a 0 to 12V pulse that has a width between 1/BAUDRATE
and 8/BAUDRATE will look just like a character has been received.
If this is just something you need to make work, using a couple of small
batteries to displace the pulse down so it rests at lower than -3V will
make it work on all laptops too.
