Sure. There are still a few talk radio stations on that band,
interspersed by a lot of static. Without a sensitive receiver, its
difficult to tell the difference.
AM is cheaper for the broadcasters. No need for expensive stereo
equipment. No need to handle a separate left and right channel, in more
ways than one. ;-)
