Almost true. Sure for guitar amps, its inescapable that tubes are part
of the sound, even when set "clean". However, for hi-fi, some people
simply prefer the distortion/characteristics of a "clean" tube amp, so
in this sense it may be considered advantages. There is no psychological
reason why exact reproduction should be considered "better". However,
there is no advantage if one simple wants a piece of wire with gain.
