In about the mid-1970's, one of my neighbors' wife had grown up in
Germany about the time that the Allies were fighting the Axis. She
said, "you didn't have to lock your door." i.e., the security of
the cattle pen. There certainly wasn't any crime around those days,
by golly, except for the crime of racial impurity, of course.
