back, the fan behind the engine and away from the "user", and tightly
bolted to the drive shaft I believe or at least belt driven from there.
Don't know much about Beetles.

This was in the 90's and no, it wasn't encapsulated. But as Spehro said,
a warning label was there. Except that this was in Europe and you just
have to hope it is in a language the driver happens to understand. I
remember when I drove an Alfa Romeo in the Netherlands and the dashboard
said things like "Luci" and "Fari". I figured it out but it took a
while. We learned Latin in school but the Romans didn't have cars and
the candles on their chariots didn't have a high-beam switch :-)

Anyway, the Audi sure was a really nice big car, never let me down and
it could go fast without guzzling gas like crazy.
