I read in sci.electronics.design that Fred Bloggs <nospam@nospam.com>
wrote (in <41603CD9.8080502@nospam.com>) about 'OT: Bush FLOPS the
Debate', on Sun, 3 Oct 2004:

But not exactly impartial, as a former Clinton associate.

That can't have been published in the Grauniad; there are no spelling
mistakes. (;-)

It does seem to me that Bush did not perform well, although I only saw
brief extracts of the debate on British TV, so I can't form a personal
judgement, even if I could have heard clearly what they were saying.

But I know that the ability to perform on their feet is not a reliable
guide to the technical prowess of my professional colleagues.

The British Parliamentary system, unlike, I think, the US system, puts
a very large premium on being able to perform on one's feet, which is
why we get so many lawyers in parliament; they are the ones who could
have chosen to be actors instead but wanted money as well. I chose to be
an engineer, so I don't get either the adulation or the money. (:-(

I can really see the immense advantages (and the disadvantages, too) of
being a Howard, like Lazarus Long; the ability to pursue several careers
in succession is extremely attractive.

In Blumenthal's piece, I wonder about the White House press corps being
'cowed'. They may be used to being fed BS, but that shouldn't cause them
to change species. I thought they all had to have ancestry traceable
back to T. rex to qualify. (;-)

The bad news is that everything is prohibited.
