What specific incident did you have in mind? $5B would be reasonable for
a class action. And one of the many original purposes for opening up
liability was actually to put the bad actors out of business- this is
basic American law- if the government has no authority to shut them
down, the judiciary can move in and bankrupt them. This is legitimate
and to the benefit of society. Not to worry- all your buddies on the
board voted themselves $100M of separation packages before they left
that shattered hulk of mismanaged crap anyway.
