Hi Martin,
Most newsswervers expire posts quickly, so if you want to see the start
of a thread, you often need to use google or a program like Free Agent.
I tried Free Agent several times, and always gave up. I'm on dialup, and
it took too long to download threads.
Google was great, but the recent changes render it all but unusable. Here
is a link to some reasons why:
The above link will last only as long as it takes google to spread their
beta code to all regions, including .ca
A far better interface, IMHO, would be to use exactly the same
presentation as google currently uses for web searches.
For newsgroups, just give a long list of the latest thread titles and
number of posts, (user-selectable from 10 to 50 entries), and a couple of
lines from the latest post. Then, when you click on it, give the complete
tree, or a single page with all the entries (again, user-selectable). And
keep the messages plain ascii as before, without introducing line breaks
or ascii 160 characters.
This allows most of the screen width for user messages, with plenty left
over for ads. The number of user keyclicks is minimized, and the desired
post can be reached quickly.
And previous links to posts can remain valid.
Everyone wins.
Best Wishes,
Mike Monett
