Go to Tools -> Options and on the Save tab, check 'prompt to save Normal
template' . Always respond 'No' to the resultant pane you may get on
shutdown unless you REALLY wanted to change it, e.g. to alter the page
margins permanently.

On the Tools -> Options Edit tab, uncheck 'when selecting, automatically
select entire word'

Hope this helps. There are many more settings to check under Tools ->
Options. For example, under Edit -> Smart cut and paste -> Settings, I
have all the boxes checked in order to paste stuff in without problems.
YMMV, of course.
