Actually Thomas Jefferson was supporting the establishment of a
Representative Republic when his famous quote was made.
America is not and never has been a "Democracy."

BTW: There are more Corporations and other businesses destroyed by
Government than are supported by the efforts of government.
What you call "corporate interests" is a Cabal, not a corporate
preference. It is corruption! There are corporate, ethnic, and
regional Cabals operating to influence Government in the US as we
speak.
