What's a "manufacturing business" though? My "retired" neighbor makes
(expensive, high-end) handmade knives and sells them at craft shows
(and, I think, on-line). A neighbor at our last house outfitted his
garage as an office and did insurance work of some kind (the
insurance-specialized courier van came regularly). I think if you
start getting traffic, creating noise or smells then you attract
attention. If you don't have employees then it's a lot harder for them
to hassle you if you're on decently good terms with the neighbors. A
lot of white-collar people are working from their homes, full or
part-time, these days. If you don't make noises and smells, don't have
many visitors, don't put up signage, and don't take deliveries or make
shipments directly from your home, I don't see how they'd even find
out unless you tell people. A lot of the denizens of
rec.crafts.metalworking must live in rural areas or areas with weak
zoning laws, as they have more equipment in their garages/basements
than many commercial machine shops!

What about all the people selling on e-bay?
