I have two new, identical Dells, with XP. After installing all my
stuff on one, I image copied the hard drive to the other. Now they are
absolutely identical, no? No! On the original one, whenever I plugged
in the USB memory stick thing, three copies of the usb Zip drive icon
would appear all over the desktop. The other machine was fine.

Eventually, with some combination of things connected (can't remember
which) I clicked a thing in the tray called "Safely Remove Hardware"
and that fixed it. I think.
