There is a common teenage-philosopher argument that people only ever
act in their self-interest. The mother that dies for her child, the
missionary who spends his life fighting malaria, *everybody* is doing
things out of selfish motives. The argument is hard to dispute and
doesn't get us anywhere. The people who really believe this have their
own interesting motives, churlishness being the least of them.
