I've always assumed that US 'duct tape' is what we call 'Gaffer tape' here in
the UK.

Hard wearing stuff with an awesome adhesive and a PVC coating ?

The UK name originates from the use of an 'old gaffer' on most film sets to
'fix things up' - usually involving tape.

Gaffer..

1. An electrician in charge of lighting on a movie or television set.
2. Chiefly British. An old man or a rustic.
3. Chiefly British. A boss or foreman.

In my live sound days I always bought the most esoteric colours possible since
it was then unlikely that the band we were providing sound for would claim
ownership of the roll in event of contest !
