what sort of devices did you replace them with ?

Mostly with logic. In TSSOP the total real estate usually didn't grow but the cost was substantially lower. Plus the stuff didn't become obsolete a few years later.

Sometimes the replacement was a cheap uC, other times a small LUT ROM.
