If I were rich enough to buy Bill Gates, I'd start a competition for ingenious young biochemists- to synthesise, from scratch (i.e. from substances it is agreed could occur naturally), the simplest self- reproducing, stable molecule which carries a few hundred bits of information.
This is already being done. I didn't see any reports of a successful outcome.
