Read Jared Diamond's latest book, "Collapse" (ISBN: 0670033375) for
four historical examples of societies who ran through their natural
resources and consequently imploded.

He also includes one example of a society who choose to stop raising
pigs - which messed up the standard way of achieving high social and
political status, but saved their environment (a small island in the
Pacific).

The book gives you an interesting perspective on public policy debates,
and some idea of what really matters to mainstream politicians.
