I recently bought a new house in the floodplain of what is now a managed
drainage channel (rock rubble sides, grass-grwoing fabric in the bottom).
The plain has not flooded since white men settled here and dug the original
drainage ditch. In order to get the loan, I had to buy three years of flood
insurance.
