Before the Iraq war began, the supposedly 'left wing' media was actively
promoting the idea, to the point of suppressing contrary evidence about
WMD. There were few in the mainstream that did any real investigative
reporting (Seymour Hersh stands out as an exception), or tried to find out
what the CIA analyst community and career state department guys were
saying about Iraq and the WMD issue. These guys wanted people to know, but
couldn't get the story out.
These days, the news from Iraq is filtered through pentagon sources, and
most of the reporters you see are afraid to do anything except attend
press conferences in the green zone or interview people like our buddy
Chalabi and his friends writing the constitution. They see more of Iraq on
the drive to and from the airport than they see during the rest of their
stay.
The voter fraud and voter intimidation in Ohio wasn't covered effectively
by the mainstream after the election. People seem to be losing interest in
paper trails for electronic voting machines. I guess voting doesn't really
matter anymore anyway, at least in the US.
Critical examination of the horror of the recent energy and transportation
bills has been limp to nonexistent.
The new bankruptcy laws, which will affect more and more Americans in the
coming years were given a cursory once-over by PBS, and ignored for the
most part by the rest of the media.
They did spent lots of time on the Michael Jackson trial, and round the
clock coverage on the Schiavo thing. They are spending lots of time on the
New Orleans issue, what with Sean Hannity and his boat full of
hairdressers.
Nobody talks about how the unions are getting squeezed out of existence,
or how the left is standing in the same place the right was 20 years ago.
I'd get my news from the 'left wing' media if I could find it.
There are Europeans out there. What do you guys think about the US media?
Presumably you often see it, given the global nature of cable news.
Europeans are usually somewhat left of the center in the US. Do you think
it's biased by liberal, left wing thinking? Do you find yourself nodding,
thinking 'these guys are just like me'?
