Microsoft led the way with that bad idea.
The first time I encountered a filename (directory_name) with
spaces was over 10 years ago in Microsoft's Windows 95 beta,
where all the programs were loaded into a file directory (folder)
called "Program Files" instead of simply calling it "Programs".
I stared at this for a long time, trying understand their decision.
Finally I concluded it was a mandatory "in-your-face" introduction
to their new long filename capability.
